I’ve owned the Volkswagen ID.4 for over five years and 80,000 miles. In this article, I’m going to cover commonly asked questions about this EV to help other potential future owners decide if it may be right for them.

What Is the Volkswagen ID.4?

The ID.4 is a fully electric crossover made by Volkswagen which competes with vehicles like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E. It was initially launched in the United States in the Spring of 2021 (which is when I got mine) with the First Edition trim.

My 2021 First Edition ID.4 has been mostly a joy to own so far.

Is the ID.4 a Good Car?

The ID.4 is a great car to own. With instant acceleration, it’s fun to drive, has a beautiful interior and exterior design, and is whisper quiet. My ID.4 has been incredibly dependable as well.

Is the ID.4 Reliable?

The ID.4 is very reliable. In fact, I’ve owned mine for over 80,000 miles with absolutely no service visits outside of regular maintenance (mostly tires) and a couple of basic recalls. Otherwise, the ID.4 hasn’t given me any trouble.

ID.4 Open Hood

Despite what it may look like, the ID.4 has few moving parts that can break over time.

Where Is the Volkswagen ID.4 Made?

As of 2026, the ID.4 is made in Chattanooga, Tennessee for North America, and in Zwickau, Germany, and China for other markets.

Is the ID.4 AWD?

The VW ID.4 comes standard as a rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle, but there are all-wheel drive trim options such as AWD Pro S.

Prior to any tax credit, the 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $45,095 (excludes destination charge) for the base Pro trim in the US. The highest priced trim is the AWD Pro S Plus which starts at $57,655. Keep in mind the actual price you’ll pay can vary by area and by dealership.

How Big Is the VW ID.4?

The ID.4 is a compact crossover SUV with a length of 180.5 inches and width of 72.9 inches without side mirrors and 83 inches in width including mirrors. For comparison, the VW Tiguan is about 4 inches longer and about the same width. Overall the ID.4 is slightly smaller in cabin space and cargo capacity.

The ID.4 is a compact electric crossover, so it’s not big, but maximizes the space it does have.

How Much Range Does the ID.4 Have?

The VW ID.4 EPA-estimated range varies from 263 miles to 291 miles depending on the trim you get.

What Is the Real-World Range of the VW ID.4?

My First Edition ID.4, rated at 250 miles of range, got 228 miles of range at highway speeds (70 mph or more) in a test I conducted during normal temperatures. I also conducted a cold weather range test. Keep in mind that real world range can depend on many factors but the most important are weather (more so cold than hot), speed, and driving with a headwind.

Can a VW ID.4 Charge at a Tesla Supercharger?

Yes, the ID.4 can use most of Tesla’s V3 and V4 Superchargers, assuming you have a compatible NACS-to-CCS adapter.

Does the ID.4 Come with a Charger?

Yes, Volkswagen provides ID.4 owners with a Level 1 home charger that plugs into regular 120V wall outlets. This equipment charges up your ID.4 at approximately 3 miles of range per hour. Of course, you can use a Level 2 charger to drastically improve speeds.

I use Lectron’s fast portable Level 1/Level 2 combo charging cable with a NEMA 14-50 and get 30 miles of range per hour of charging, which has made a big difference in my ownership experience. You can find it on Lectron’s website or on Amazon. The investment was worth it!

VW includes home charging equipment with the ID.4.

Does the ID.4 Have Regenerative Braking?

Yes, the VW ID.4 has regenerative braking. This feature uses the electric motors to slow the vehicle down automatically, while adding energy back to the battery pack to help extend range. To activate it, simply turn your drive stalk to the “B” mode. If you don’t want to use it, you can turn it off by shifting to “D” mode instead.

Does the Volkswagen ID.4 Have One-Pedal Driving?

Unfortunately, the ID.4 does not have one-pedal driving. Though the ID.4 has two features that make up one-pedal driving, regenerative braking and an auto hold mode (software 3.1 required), you must put your foot on the brake to come to a complete stop and to engage the hold feature.

Volkswagen ID.4 Pedals

One of the features I missed when coming from other EVs was true one-pedal driving. Unfortunately, the brake gets lots of use in the ID.4.

Does the ID.4 Have Self-Driving or Autonomous Features?

The VW ID.4 does have a handful of standard advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) features including radar cruise control, lane-keep assist, and steering assist. I find that the software is generally reliable on the highway but it can struggle with tight curves or in roadwork situations, so you should always be alert with your hand on the wheel.

How Fast Is the VW ID.4?

The quickest ID.4 models (AWD) go from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, while the RWD trims get there in around 6 seconds. The top speed is software-limited to 112 mph. Though those numbers aren’t market leading, it’s more than enough to be able to comfortably pass on the highway.

Does the ID.4 Have a Heated Steering Wheel?

Yes, all Volkswagen ID.4 trim levels “S” and above get a heated steering wheel. The heat has a low, medium, and high setting, which gets nice and toasty on a cold winter day. I highly recommend it!

Does the ID.4 Have Ventilated Seats?

Yes, VW started providing the option for ventilated seats with the 2024 model year. It was not available prior to this.

Does the VW ID.4 Have a Heat Pump?

Volkswagen doesn’t offer a heat pump on any trims of the ID.4 in the United States, but it is available in other markets like Europe. This is a bummer, as range decreases around 30-40% in freezing temperatures.

Does the ID.4 Have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes, all VW ID.4 Models come standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While they typically work well, there are some annoying bugs every now and then.

Can the ID.4 Be Remote Started?

Yes, you can use the MyVW app to turn on the climate control remotely. Otherwise, like many EVs, you don’t “stop” or “start” the ID.4. It just turns on when you open the door or off when you leave the driver seat.

How Do You Start the ID.4?

ID.4 Start Button

The ID.4 will automatically turn on when someone is in the driver’s seat. Otherwise, you can use this button.

Does the ID.4 Have a Third Row?

No, the VW ID.4 does not offer a third row. If you’re looking for one, I’d suggest checking out a larger electric SUV like the Rivian R1S instead.

Does the VW ID.4 Have a 360 Degree Camera?

Starting with the 2023 model year, VW started including 360-degree camera options for higher trim ID.4s. Prior to this, there were only parking and wide-angle rearview cameras.

How Do You Update the ID.4 Software?

Software updates have been Volkswagen’s Achilles heel. While some ID.4 owners of newer model years have received an over-the-air (OTA) software update, I haven’t yet, even after five years of ownership. Instead, I only received an update after bringing my ID.4 to a dealership, as it required some other physical part changes as well.

VW ID.4 Software

Hopefully VW improves the ID.4’s software update process.

However, if your ID.4 does get an OTA software update, it will notify you both in the app and the infotainment system. You’ll need to download the update, roll all of your windows up, unplug your vehicle, and lock the doors before installation can start.

How Do You Unlock a Stuck Charger From the ID.4?

Try double-clicking the unlock button on the key fob. If this doesn’t work, you must use the manual release located in the trunk. Learn more in my VW ID.4 owner tips article.

Does the VW ID.4 Have a Front Trunk?

Sorry, no frunk here. VW prioritized interior cabin space by pushing the vehicle electronics and other components forward into where the front trunk would be.

What Is the Rear Cargo Capacity of the ID.4?

The ID.4 offers a solid 30.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats. If you fold them down, you’ll get 64.2 cubic feet. This is a little less than some of the competition, like the Toyota RAV4, but has been plenty for me thus far.

VW ID.4 Cargo Area

There’s a solid amount of cargo space in the ID.4, even without a front trunk.

Does the Volkswagen ID.4 Have Real Leather Seats?

No, the ID.4 only offers cloth or vegan leather seating material. I have the leatherette material in gray which doesn’t get too hot, even in the Texas heat. I highly recommend going with this option.

Are the ID.4 Seats Comfortable?

The ID.4 seats are well cushioned, supportive, and you can get an optional massage function for both front passengers if you’d like. They have also held up incredibly well so far.

VW ID.4 First Edition Gray Leatherette

I’ve been very happy with both the comfort and durability of the leatherette seats.

Is the VW ID.4 Interior Hard to Clean?

The vegan leather in the ID.4 is not at all hard to clean. I recommend wiping it down with unscented baby wipes every couple of weeks. By doing this, I do not have any stains or other signs of wear even after 80,000 miles of use.

How Do You Clean the VW ID.4’s Screen?

The ID.4’s owner manual states that you should use a little bit of water and glass or LCD cleaner to wipe them down. It also states to never clean them when they are dry. If you just want to get rid of the fingerprints, use a glass cleaning cloth.

How Do You Take the ID.4 Through a Car Wash?

The ID.4 doesn’t offer a “car wash” mode, but there are only a few simple steps you will need to follow. First, put the car in neutral by turning the drive shifter halfway down towards you. Make sure that your automatic wipers are turned off by putting the wiper stalk in the highest position. Finally, fold your mirrors in if you need to using the switch on the door. It looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing inwards on it.

How Do You Fold in the ID.4’s Mirrors?

While the VW ID.4 doesn’t offer a side mirror auto-folding feature for saved locations, there’s at least a physical control to do it manually. You twist the small round knob-like control on the driver’s door near the window switches to the rectangular icon with an arrow on it.

ID.4 Mirror Controls

You can fold both side view mirrors in by turning this switch to the highlighted icon.

How Do You Reset the ID.4 Screen?

To reset the VW ID.4’s infotainment system, you place your finger on the power button located at the base of the screen and hold down for approximately 10 seconds. The screen will go black and you should see the VW logo as it comes back on.

How Do You Reset the VW ID.4?

There are really only two ways to reset the ID.4. One is to simply get out of the vehicle and let it go to sleep for 15-20 minutes. The other, which I don’t use or recommend, is to unhook the 12V battery for about the same amount of time and then reconnect it.

Wrap Up

I’ll keep adding to this over time as I come across more potential buyers or current owners of the ID.4 that have questions, so be sure to check back in the future.
